520 |a Institutions seeking supplementary funding should not be afraid of approaching foundations for grants but should be sure that they understand the grant-seeking process so they do not waste time and effort sending inadequate proposals to uninterested foundations. This booklet, a guide to grantsmanship intended primarily for Catholic educators, notes the value of foundations as funding sources, reviews the types of foundations in existence, and discusses grantsmanship as an extended process rather than as a mere exercise in proposal writing. The guide then moves through the process step by step, beginning with methods for researching foundations to determine which foundations to consider, what kinds and amounts of support are available, and what kinds of recipients are favored. Sources for information are cited. The guide next discusses contacting foundations by telephone or letter and reviews the steps involved in preparing for personal interviews. Organizing, packaging, and presenting the proposal are the final steps in the process. Two sample proposals and information on The Foundation Center are presented as appendixes. (PGD)
