Description
Summary:A descriptive study was conducted of the students who enrolled at Portland Community College (PCC) in fall 1984. The study, which focused on students' demographic characteristics, educational background, average credit hours, motives for attending PCC, employer-paid tuition, residence, and life-long learning, served as the basis for the identification of a number of issues and suggested activities for the college. Study findings, based on a survey of 10,976 students, included the following: (1) the typical PCC student was a white (85.7%) woman (55.6%), almost 33 years old, who graduated (55.1%) from a high school likely to be located within the PCC district (73.2%); (2) 11% of all new on-campus students had a baccalaureate degree and 31% had attended a four-year college; (3) students took an average of 7.70 credit hours; (4) students' primary reasons for attending PCC were to gain new occupational skills that lead to careers and for personal development; (5) 7% of the students received employer tuition assistance; and (6) 383 of the students enrolled in fall 1984 had first attended PCC in 1973. Appendices contain a series of tables and graphs showing data for the college as a whole and each of its campuses and centers. (EJV)
