| 520 | |a Results of the l986 survey of science teaching in the secondary schools of New Jersey are presented in this report. Data from l87 public and non-public secondary schools are organized into the categories of: (l) student enrollment in science courses; (2) professional staffing; (3) program offerings; (4) teaching assignments; (5) science supervisor/chairperson information; (6) curriculum revision; (7) textbooks; and (8) course organization. Highlights of this survey, which is the fifth in a series by the state since l968 are reviewed. It was found that a slight increase occurred in the percentage of students taking science and that instructional time has increased in biology, chemistry, and physics. Pertaining to staffing, respondents revealed that only seven percent of current science teachers plan to retire within the next four years and that recruitment of new science teachers is less difficult than it was four years ago. It was reported that more schools are developing safety programs and that an increase in the science requirement for graduation is planned. (ML) | ||
