Summary:This booklet was written for educators and child care personnel who are uncertain about their roles in reporting suspected cases of child abuse and neglect. The guidelines contained in this document are intended to promote: (1) the development of school policies on child abuse and neglect; (2) the raising of awareness about the problem; (3) the raising of awareness about child abuse and neglect laws and procedures; (4) the establishment of cooperative intervention strategies involving appropriate community resources; and (5) the development of procedures in dealing with suspected cases of child abuse or neglect. The role of teachers in dealing with suspected cases of child abuse or neglect is outlined. The diagnosis of physical neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse, and emotional abuse or neglect is discussed. Charts listing physical and behavioral indicators of each of these abuse categories are included. Procedures for reporting suspected cases are explained, a chart of a community agency locator is provided, and a checklist for reporting and a suggested report form are included. (NB)
