Chapter 1 presents statistics on the incidence of adolescent suicides and suicide attempts. Chapter 2, Causes of Suicide, reviews developmental tasks of adolescence, lists several contributors to adolescent suicide, and examines two of the most prevalent causes--depression and the loss of a parent--in more depth. Eight myths about suicide are discussed in chapter 3. Chapter 4 describes warning signs under the categories of verbal clues, behavioral clues, and situational clues. Ten critical questions to ask a student are suggested for school personnel who notice suicide warning signs in a student. Chapter 5 addresses the issue of alienation from the family as a possible contributor to adolescent suicide. Chapter 6 focuses on prevention and describes the functions of a school Crisis Resource Team and an Adolescent Study Team, both composed of various school personnel. Staff awareness, parent programs, health programs, and the student role are also explored. Chapter 7 suggests ways for schools to respond to a suicide, focusing on the role of the principal. The final chapter addresses the psychological impact of an adolescent suicide on a principal. (NB) | ||
