Description
Summary:This paper provides an overview of instructional evaluation in higher education with a special emphasis upon student evaluation of teaching. The paper includes an examination of the context for evaluation, components of evaluation, and research on student evaluation of instruction, and it proposes a series of recommendations for the implementation of student evaluations. A major portion of the paper reviews selected research literature regarding such matters as the validity, reliability, influential factors, instrumentation, administration, and impact of student evaluation of teaching. Research evidence on the impact of student ratings on the improvement of teaching is also examined. The kind of rating scales that should be used and how rating forms should be administered are considered. An eight-page reference list concludes the document. (JD)
