The system is designed to be used, in part, in conjunction with a natural language query system that allows a user to access a database. The discussion of military language and military decision-making from the perspective of cognitive psychology looks at the characteristics of this language style, the intention of the speaker or questioner, use of top-down language processing, the role of background knowledge in military communication, the effects of context on meaning, the relevance of syntactic and semantic analysis for military language use, and the usefulness of inferential and domain-specific processing. The taxonomy is an outline of sentence characteristics incorporating all of these concepts, and is designed to be applied to both single utterances and connected discourse. (MSE)
