| Summary: | A study was carried out in Kenya to investigate the oral lexical production of learners of English as a Second Language with different native languages. The overall results revealed a clear difference between the Kenya language speakers on the one hand and native speakers on the other: native speakers showed an overwhelming preference for manner verbs of locomotion, while the Kenyans had a slight preference for path verbs. On closer investigation, it was found that there were significant differences between speakers of different native languages in the distribution of these motion verb types. This suggests that cross-linguistic influence can operate in quite subtle ways along with other factors. (Contains 45 references.) (Author/JL) |
