| Summary: | In this paper, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) are analyzed in terms of stigma and illness trajectory. The primary purpose is to conceptualize how individuals with HIV/AIDS experience stigma and to demonstrate how these experiences are affected by the social and biophysical dimensions of the HIV/AIDS disease course. This paper is informed by existing conceptualizations and ongoing research into the experience of HIV/AIDS caregivers. Three stages are used to analytically describe the HIV/AIDS illness trajectory: the At Risk stage, the Latent stage, and the Manifest stage. The Latent stage is subdivided into the Latent Acute and Latent Asymptomatic phases while the Manifest stage is subdivided into the Early Manifest and the Full Blown AIDS phases. It is noted that the nature of stigma and its management change as the individual progresses from one stage in the trajectory to the next. It is proposed that, in going from being at risk for HIV infection to full blown AIDS, the individual and the caregiver must address several problems: (1) the experience and impact of stigma; (2) information control and management; (3) identity changes; and (4) physical decline and impending death associated with HIV/AIDS. How the individual and caregivers address these and other problems of HIV/AIDS stigma are analyzed and discussed. (Contains 75 references.) (Author/NB) |
