520 |a The goal of this curriculum is to assist educators to develop a classroom community in which all children, including those with significant disabilities, feel good about themselves and work together to support the active learning and valued membership of all class members. The specific goal of the lessons is to promote positive self-concept and effective interpersonal skills. The lessons are intended to help children in grades K-4 recognize their own strengths and the strengths of other children regardless of (and in many cases because of) their differences. The lessons teach children that everyone needs to feel accepted and included. The four lessons are: "Including Everyone: We All Need To Belong,""Liking Myself: Self-Esteem Is Important,""Making and Keeping Friends: Everybody Needs a Friend," and "Cooperating with Others: Together We Can Do It." Each of the lessons includes an introduction of the topic using children's literature, discussion questions, and activities. Appendices contain materials for use in implementing the learning activities. (JDD)
