Description
Summary:This practicum paper describes a method for developing and implementing a student-discipline plan in a small, rural high school in north central Florida. The combined middle- and high-school is the poorest in the county. When corporal punishment was banned in the county and no alternatives were implemented, the number of suspensions increased. An analysis of discipline referrals and suspensions for 1989-1990 and 1990-91 revealed a large number of referrals for a small school and an increase in the number of out-of-school suspensions. A program was then implemented to increase parent, student, community, teacher, and administrator involvement in the formulation of discipline guidelines. Second, teacher guidelines for handling discipline problems were developed. The practicum intervention resulted in increased teacher involvement in the discipline process; greater communication between student and teacher, teacher and parent, and teacher and dean; increased parent participation; a reduction in the number of discipline referrals; and the introduction of an in-school detention program, which significantly decreased the number of out-of-school suspensions. Nine tables and three figures are included. Appendices contain the pre- and post-questionnaires and sample forms. (LMI)
