520 |a This paper examines the influence of Chinese (and specifically Taiwanese) culture on the conduct of English as a Second Language (ESL) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instruction in Taiwan. Rapid economic development since the Second World War has led to a conflict of cultures, between traditional Chinese values and norms and Western values and norms. This conflict is especially felt in the ESL/EFL classroom, where instructional methods and the target language culture often conflict with standard Taiwanese instructional practices and the indigenous culture. Specific examples of these cultural and instructional clashes are presented and discussed, focusing on verbal and nonverbal cues in ESL/EFL classrooms. (Contains 51 references.) (MDM)
