520 |a The guidebook describes a model for a community-based adult and family literacy program for immigrant and refugee communities that draws on and enhances the strengths of community members with strong educational backgrounds who can serve as community literacy teachers and leaders (interns). Mentors from adult education programs trained the interns to teach English as a Second Language and English literacy. The project, a collaborative effort of three adult education programs, a university, and a literacy organization, is described in the guidebook. An introductory section gives an overview of the project and the guidebook. In the first five chapters, the project is detailed, including context and rationale, project structure and participants, the training/mentoring component, transition from training to teaching, and project evaluation. The final chapter outlines findings, challenges, and recommendations. Lists of references and resources for training are included. Appended materials include a letter welcoming interns to the training program, samples of minutes and handouts from training workshops, and some sample evaluation tools (possible questions for student exit interviews and checklists for student assessment).
