Behavioral factors of the individual child were analyzed and compared with statistics covering family status and stability, and both considerations were investigated as relative contributors to parental attitude. The sample was drawn from parents of 400 mentally retarded children, varying in mental ability and family-school environments and representing a wide range of social, economic, and cultural influences. The data were gathered through direct interviews with the parents. Findings of this study indicate that most pertinent in an index of family acceptance or integration are those qualities in the parents themselves related to high self-esteem, low child-rearing anxiety, low sex anxiety, high husband-wife agreement on child-rearing technIQues, low feelings of self-blame, and high affectional interchange between the child and both parents. Further research was indicated in the areas of parent counseling and parent-school interaction and cooperation. (jh)
