520 | |a The Cooperative Urban Teacher Education (CUTE) Program is an imaginative venture for preparing effective teachers for inner-city schools. Basic to the development of CUTE is the premise that a teacher acts according to how he/she perceives a given situation, and that these perceptions depend upon his/her earlier experiences. If accepted, this premise has significant implications for preparing prospective teachers to teach in the inner city schools. Unique features of the CUTE program are its high degree of inter-disciplinary cooperation, the emphasis placed upon teacher self-understanding, and the fact that is is housed in the inner city. Explosive education problems permeating inner city schools influence CUTE to help prospective teachers explore their basic beliefs and reinforce their feelings of self-adequacy. A fascinating aspect of this program is the diversification of the staff members. Voluntary student participation is another of its key aspects. In order to help students achieve self-identity the mental health staff established objectives which are discussed individually. They are as follows: resolving unresolved feelings, confrontation with professionalism, and a working knowledge of children. The student log is one of the requirements for participants of the program. Its purpose is to provide the instructional and evaluational staffs with student reactions to the program.
