| Summary: | This study examines how 273 adolescents view the help provided to them by their mothers, their fathers and their peers. The assumption was that the parent-child relationship, in particular, would contain many of the ingredients (proximity, affection, responsibility, shared experiences) which should foster the development of helping relationships between mothers and fathers and their adolescents. Special interest was placed on the fathers' role, since men in this culture are socialized to be providers and breadwinners and are not as likely to be prepared for emotional-supportive roles as women. The data provide some interesting observations on ways adolescents perceived their fathers serving as helpers, and indicate that working men with families may be having difficulties in switching from the demands of work roles to the demands of father roles.
