| 520 | |a Summaries of Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) score statistics (means, standard deviations, and the number of students taking the test) are presented for students grouped according to testing years (for 1956-57 to 1975-76) and according to high school classes (from 1966-67 to 1975-76). For recent years, mean scores for geographical regions and for students grouped according to selected responses to the Student Descriptive Questionnaire (SDQ) are also presented. The following trends are apparent: (1) a dramatic rate of increase in numbers of candidates taking the SAT from 1956-57 to 1964-65, a slower rate of increase from 1964-65 to 1969-70, then a decline to 1973-74; (2) stable mean SAT verbal and mathematical scores from 1956-57 to about 1962-63, then a fairly steady decline for both scores through 1975-76, (3) somewhat larger declines for verbal than for mathematical mean scores, and somewhat larger declines for both means in recent years. The information reported on the SDQ indicates that candidates from 1971-72 to 1975-76 are similar in terms of ethnic background, rank in class, and educational goals. There is, however, a trend away from liberal arts to other fields--primarily career-oriented fields such as business, education, and health. (Author/EVH) | ||
