Description
Summary:A study was conducted to construct a preliminary version of a shortened form of the Occupation Analysis Inventory (OAI:SF). (The OAI is an instrument containing 622 work elements which are descriptions of work activities and conditions on which jobs and occupations are rated. The work elements were generated within a broad framework of five components: (1) information received, (2) mental activities, (3) observable behavior, (4) work outcomes (compared to goals), and (5) work context.) The development of a 229 item-OAI:SF was based on ninety work-dimensions derived through factor analysis of the 622 OAI work elements. Ratings on the OAI:SF of 150 jobs by four raters were used to compute inter-rater reliabilities for the 229 items. Those reliabilities were substantial. The validity of the short form was examined by determining the extent to which ratings with OAI:SF yielded information similar to those obtained from the OAI in terms of factor scores and human attribute requirements. The results indicate that ratings with the OAI and OAI:SF yield similar factor score information about jobs and substantially the same attribute information. The feasibility of developing a short form of the OAI based on the OAI work dimensions was supported by the results. (The appendix comprises two-thirds of this report and includes OAI:SF; the attribute requirements; inter-rater reliability coefficients; reliability estimates of OAI:SF items and attribute requirement; and correlations of attribute requirement estimates and factor scores of OAI:SF with OAI.)
