Summary: | The guide presents learning objectives, course outlines, and resource lists for music courses in grades seven through 12. There are three major sections. Section one outlines required music programs and instrumental and choral programs for junior high students. The major objective is to orient students aesthetically to music and to develop skills in listening, performing, and creating. Teachers are encouraged to build course activities and content around topics of interest to this age group, such as "science and sound" or "music and worship." Section two outlines required music programs and instrumental and choral programs for high school students. Objectives are for students to develop awareness of music, musical skills, knowledge of music literature, and ability to discriminate. Courses should include music history and analysis, research in music and related arts, theory and composition, and research for advanced students. Instrumental and choral programs should allow students to work in small groups and should make available specific equipment in music rooms. Section three identifies resource material according to historical periods in art and literature; outlines elements of the symphony orchestra; diagrams the number of each instrument required in school bands and orchestras; and offers music lists for elementary and secondary school orchestra, band, and chorus.
