520 |a The contributions of two black women journalists--Ida Baker Wells and Ethel L. Payne--are examined in this paper. The paper first discusses the life and work of Phillis Wheatley and traces the history of the black press in the pre- and post-Civil War eras, noting types of black publications that existed, major problems they faced, and limitations placed on black women who wrote for them. The paper then describes the events that led Ida Wells into journalism in Memphis in the late nineteenth century, and tells of her editorial crusades against lynching, the resulting threats of violence against her, and her move to New York City, where she pursued her journalistic career. Her later career is also chronicled, including continued crusades against lynching and on behalf of black rights. The professional achievements of Ethel Payne are then described; the paper relates how Payne began her writing career during World War II; presents excerpts from her newspaper columns that show her treatment of such topics as political candidates, discrimination, and black activists; notes awards she has won and prominent events in her career; and notes her views on women in the media and the future of the black press. A bibliography of related publications is included. (GW)
