Grades were compared in classes that were taught by the same professors and were of the same size in 1970-71 and 1975-76. The ability level of the students was statistically controlled. Evidence was found of grade inflation. Grades in the same classes taught by the same professors were significantly higher in 1975-76 despite the fact that the students' average SAT scores were significantly lower. One of the most conspicuous changes in the grading pattern over the five-year period was the significant increase in the percent of W's awarded. (Author/MSE) | ||
