520 |a This study examines the need for programs for the disadvantaged child in Newfoundland, and illustrates what directions such programs must take to be effective. A sample was taken of 120 children in grades 1, 3, and 5 of two schools. The family background variables examined were father's and mother's occupation and education, the number of children in the family, and the household composition. To sample a range of behaviors related to school success, the Wechsler Intelligence Scale (Revised), the Illinois Test of Psycholinguistic Abilities, and the Concept Assessment Test were administered to all subjects. Parent interviews were conducted to understand the relationship of the home environment to school success. Language models of the home, and other family influences on academic achievement of children were studied. It is concluded that the sample of children from one of the schools shows environmental impoverishment. To compensate for this disadvantagement, program goals for such children are suggested. A program entitled Language Time is explained and some sample lessons for this program are presented. (Author/AM)
