| 520 | |a The most important and most difficult task of the assistant principal for instruction in a multiunit high school is recruitment of teachers for the learning communities. These teachers must be convinced that the increased workload and added responsibilities involved in developing interdisciplinary courses, budgeting time, space, and funding, and dealing with students on an individual basis are offset by the autonomy, academic freedom, and positive student response gained in return. Other tasks shared by the assistant principal for instruction include teacher evaluation, monitoring the instructional budget, promoting cross-disciplinary techniques, organizing summer work, overseeing use of curriculum guides and independent study projects, providing for inservice training, and developing the learning community concept. The assistant principal for student services, on the other hand, has responsibility for such noninstructional phases of the high school operation as facility usage and security, discipline, and the extracurricular budget. The learning community affects this role in two ways. The learning community itself takes on some first-level disciplinary functions, and the assistant principal for student services must modify record-keeping processes to assist measurement of the program's success.
