In Great Britain, the Local Government Operational Research Unit was asked by Northumberland County Council to examine how delays in the preconstruction period might be reduced. A detailed analysis was made of nine school building projects on which construction had been scheduled to begin in the 1964/65 program. The results of the study showed that by using critical path analysis--a technique developed in the early days of operational research--the time between receipt of the central department's approval for a new school and the signing of the building contract could have been reduced by at least 10 percent. This report describes the main features of the technique and shows how it can be used to control the early stages of school building projects. (Author/MLF) | ||
