Summary: | This report concentrates on the problems associated with the negative image of the historical, social, and cultural backgrounds of Polish immigrants to the United States. It provides a perspective on the problems this immigrant group encountered in establishing and maintaining its cultural identity. Specific problems with negative stereotyping, discriminatory attitudes, bias in employment, and poor self-image are discussed. Factors contributing to the negative stereotyping such as "Polish jokes" and other forms of prejudice are also discussed. Suggestions are made for rectifying this "negative ethnocentrism." Reference is made to psychological studies which indicate that bicultural programs foster positive self-image. Specific cultural approaches suggested include a gain in political influence and the exposure of ethnic Polish and other minorities to Polish foods, music, and literature. (EB) |
