Summary: | Outlined in this paper are a number of sample lesson plans designed to deal with discriminatory textbooks and curriculum materials. The format of the lesson plans presented is based on the use of negative examples in a textbook or a film as a starting point for a lesson to counter some of the stereotyping that occurs in American education. Emphasis is on expanding the knowledge of contributions made by women and minorities to American technology and the value structure of American society. Sample lesson plans are presented for reading, science, spelling, social studies, and mathematics on the primary, intermediate, and secondary instructional levels. Each lesson plan contains a brief description of the text and/or an example to be used, the objective of the lesson, suggested activities, and a list of references. (EB) |
