The workshop addressed the following four issues: (1) the objectives of present and future clinical education in the light of public needs and professional responsibilities; (2) the nature, types, setting, and extent of clinical experience required to provide for present and future educational needs; (3) methods and techniques of clinical education and responsibilities of the clinical instructors; and (4) evaluation of student performance and program effectiveness. For each issue a topic outline, presentation summary, workshop conclusions, and evaluation are provided. A summary of a special presentation on assessing medical competence is also included. Findings of the project evaluation are outlined. Half the report consists of the following appendices: a calendar of conference events, lists of the advisory committee, project staff, and attendees, copies of educational materials distributed by presenters, details of the evaluation data, and a curriculum vitae.
