The questionnaire distributed to faculty members requested information about the kinds of writing assignments they gave, the factors they used in judging student writing, and the weaknesses they most often encountered in that writing. The managerial questionnaire requested information about the various writing tasks performed by the managers and their employees, the writing skills sought in prospective employees, and the writing weaknesses commonly encountered in employee communications. Writing samples of students and employees were also elicited. The results revealed 35 types of business writing, 29 writing skills sought in prospective employees, 25 weaknesses in business writing, 22 kinds of college writing assignments, 53 factors by which such writing was judged, and 44 weaknesses commonly encountered by college teachers.
