520 |a Between July 1975 and August 1977, telephone interview surveys were conducted to assess the socioeconomic adjustment of Vietnamese refugees to American society. Between the first and last survey, it was found that the employment situation of the refugees had improved. Most refugees who want work have been able to find jobs. The data suggest that on the measures of employment and income the newly arrived Vietnamese refugees are making substantial progress. The refugees still face many problems, however. Most have jobs of lower status than they held in Vietnam, and their pay is low by American standards. Most require greater proficiency in English. Some report feelings of isolation and depression. Nevertheless, in general, the refugees are making substantial socioeconomic progress and are moving toward self-sufficiency. The sociohistorical model used in the analysis shows the contrast between the immigration and assimilation pattern of earlier Asian immigrants and the unique pattern of migration leading to socioeconomic adaptation and future assimilation of the Vietnamese refugees.
