| Summary: | Frequency data are reported from a research project aimed at developing the Behavior Observation Scale (BOS), an objective assessment tool for establishing the diagnosis of autism. The goals of the BOS are to differentiate autistic, normal, and mentally retarded children (ages 30 to 60 months) along objective symptom axes involving 67 behaviors. Operational definitions and procedures are described, and frequency analyses of the preliminary data based on 140 children are reported. These data indicated that in order to determine the diagnostic importance of any behavior, both the frequency of occurrence and percentage of children exhibiting the behavior must be considered simultaneously. The results are discussed in terms of methodological problems encountered in attempting to establish objective diagnostic criteria for the syndrome of autism. (Author/DLS) |
