Description
Summary:During the 1979-80 academic year the Vocational Guidance Program at Halstead High School, a rural school with an enrollment of 225 students, placed over half the juniors and seniors in work-study positions, helped 24 seniors secure $38,000 in scholarship awards, and provided some type of career materials and information to students in all grades to provide work-study opportunities for high school students. In grades K-8 the classroom teacher incorporates career study into the traditional curriculum areas. In grades 9-12 teachers conduct career exploration units related to their particular discipline; and the school counselor coordinates the total program, which includes individual and small group guidance, financial aid planning for college-bound students, work-study placements in the community, special attention to the needs of female students and students who do not plan post-high school study, and campus visits by representatives from colleges, the military, technical-vocational schools, and business. Appendices include guidelines for developing a counseling approach to career education, for cooperation between high schools and vocational-technical schools, and for work-study programs. (JH)
