Summary: | The variation in requirements for graduation found in California high schools is a serious problem for migrant students and greatly diminishes their chances for high school graduation. In order to present an analysis of this variation for use by all educators concerned with the problems of migrant education and to provide the Parlier High School Portable Assisted Study Sequence (P.A.S.S.) Program with information necessary for curriculum and program planning, the graduation requirements of a sample of 46 high schools participating in P.A.S.S. were analyzed in the areas of math, science, language arts, social studies, physical education, electives, and total units required. In non-elective curriculum areas, the greatest variability of requirements was in language arts, social studies, and physical education. Math and science requirements varied only slightly. The number of required elective units ranged from 60 to 155, and the number of non-elective units ranged from 65 to 140. The total units required ranged from 200 to 240, with the majority (57%) requiring 220. The findings, generalizable to migrant education throughout California, have implications for the curriculum design of the P.A.S.S. Program and are indicative of potential difficulties facing the program's goal of helping migrant students graduate from high school. (SB) |
