| 520 | |a This report presents selected research results on the backgrounds, attitudes, and activities of a special sample of New Jersey school board members. The purpose of the study was to determine the influence of women board members on decision-making. Members of 37 New Jersey boards were interviewed in 1978. This report highlights the research findings in three major areas. The first section examines backgrounds, motivations, and circumstances of election or appointment of participants in the study. The second section is devoted to a comparison of women and men in their roles as board members. The third section presents an analysis of attitudes and board activity in an area of special significance to male-female roles in society. The paper concludes that differences between women and men found in the research imply subtle but discernible alterations in the functioning of school boards as women come to make up half the membership.
