Summary: | A study of 402 kindergarten and first grade students was undertaken to determine whether screening can predict future school related problems and if the month of birth is significantly related to the incidence of school problems. Screening records were reviewed for each of the Ss, and a Screening Review Form was completed for each S with the following information: name, date of birth, age at screening, location of screening, screening test administered, parent and teacher concerns, screening performance by area, screening outcomes, screening recommendations, and parent responses to recommendations. Findings indicated that when the preschool screening indicated serious concern in a particular area there was a strong likelihood that the child later received services in that area. The process appeared to be somewhat conservative in identifying children's special needs, especially in the fine motor area. The data (limited) suggested that fewer special services would be delivered if students did not enter kindergarten until age 5. Among appendixes are the File Review Form, the Parent Interview Form, and the Nursery School Teacher Interview Form. (PHR) |
