520 |a The purpose of this paper is to report progress on the development of an observation instrument useful in characterizing the communication between teacher and student during oral reading instruction. The paper is divided into five major sections: (1) an overview of oral reading instruction at primary levels, (2) a theoretical perspective for instructional communications during oral reading, (3) a critical review of past research into instructional communication during oral reading with an emphasis on the observational systems used, (4) a presentation of the taxonomy called Feedback to Oral Reading Miscue Analysis System (FORMAS), and (5) a preliminary report of findings of studies using this taxonomy. FORMAS is described as an extensive categorization instrument, used to describe teacher/student interactions during oral reading instruction in four categories or clusters: miscue type, student reaction to miscue, teacher verbal feedback, and miscue outcome. A description is provided of six studies currently in progress using variations of the FORMAS taxonomy. Appendixes include categories used in other studies, a sample of the FORMAS taxonomy, and scoring examples for each category. (MKM)
