Summary: | An overview is provided of streaming in the Toronto school system and a summary of studies presented from Toronto and other Ontario school systems which have examined the relationships between streaming and academic achievement, ethnic background, social origin and future placement of students. Streaming is defined as the placement of pupils in groupings according to a criterion such as ability, achievement, interest, need, or a combination of these factors. In this way, pupils can proceed toward appropriate educational goals at an appropriate rate. Detailed information is given on the relationship between streaming and the following variables: (1) literacy; (2) math and technical skills; (3) racial background; (4) language and country of origin; (5) social and economic status; (6) future school/job placement; (7) mental and physical disabilities; and (8) academic achievement. Data is provided on streaming at both elementary and secondary level public schools. (JD) |
