520 |a Research on social supports of the aged indicates that creation and maintenance of supportive interpersonal bonds among the elderly result in an enhancement of their quality of life. The nature of social support networks at different points in the life course was investigated to determine the relative size of social networks and the way men and women feel about them. Subjects were 718 individuals aged 50 and over (299 men and 419 women), chosen by probability sampling techniques to represent their age cohort in the coterminous United States. Interview findings indicated that women had slightly larger networks than men at the three age levels, i.e., middle-age (50-64), young-old (75-74), and old-old (75+). Men's and women's feelings about their networks were significantly different only in relation to how much their health interfered with network interactions. Significant age differences were found regarding the desirability of a larger network and the extent to which health interfered with network interactions. (Author)
