It is intended for English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction and is particularly appropriate for native speakers of French. Based on the cognitive approach to language learning, the booklet presents first an analysis of the material to be learned, and secondly, drills and exercises for practice in listening, production, and automation. In the first section the following topics are addressed: (1) contrastive rhythm; (2) comparative sentences; (3) English as a stress-timed language; (4) general rules and examples of stressed and unstressed syllables; (5) helpful hints on function words, contractions, prefixes and suffixes, and reduced phrases. The second section, "Drills and Exercises" contains 13 types of rhythm and stress exercises as well as suggestions for active listening. Examples of phrases and sentences in French are provided where contrast or comparison with patterns in another language is appropriate. Stress and rhythm patterns are illustrated with pen and ink drawings. (AMH)
