Description
Summary:Operating on the assumption that good middle schools differ significantly from other schools and that the differences should be identifiable by a disinterested observer, the author of this document visited 39 schools and attended 3 conferences to learn at first hand the characteristics of good middle schools and to identify the practices that made them good. The product of this informal study is a listing of 33 characteristics of good schools and 270 ideas or practices used in the schools in such processes as administration, instruction, curriculum planning, gaining student involvement, maintaining good community relations, and obtaining funding. The author offers specific recommendations to state departments of education, local school districts, and administrators at the school building level. (PGD)
