Description
Summary:Information on the characteristics of 1980 college graduates in the fields of physics and astronomy and their postbaccalaureate plans is presented. Among the survey findings are the following: a 10 percentage-point increase in civilian employment and a 9 percentage-point decrease in graduate study have occurred since 1975; over 80 percent of the employment-oriented bachelors applied to only one type of employer in 1980; and a 17 percent increase in starting salaries in one year for the 1980 physics bachelors was recorded. During the 1979-80 academic year 4,440 physics and 165 astronomy bachelor's degrees were granted. Changes in four postbaccalaureate plans of 10 successive graduating classes are indicated, and the characteristics of graduates are correlated to the plans (graduate study in physics/astronomy or other fields, employment, and undecided). The student characteristics are: sex, citizenship status, age, minority group membership, type of undergraduate institution attended, type of degree, and field of double major. Information is also provided on the following: postbaccalaureate plans of the members of minority groups among the physics bachelors of the class of 1980, sources of anticipated support for first-year graduate study for 1975 and 1980; changes in employment outlook for new physics majors, 1973-80; initial employment of physics bachelors, 1974-80; use of physics training by type of employment, 1980 physics bachelors; full-time employment of new physics bachelors, 1980; starting salaries of 1980 physics bachelors and astronomy bachelors; and postbaccalaureate plans of physics bachelors and astronomy bachelors of the class of 1980.
