Description
Summary:Based on the assumption that moving out of education and into new careers requires the use of specific concepts, methods, and skills, the problems of educational careers and basic concepts of career management are analyzed, and proven methods for finding new jobs are outlined. The approach is adapted from the Ferrini and Parker career development model, which is a four-step process involving career assessment, exploration, skill development, and implementation. Attention is directed to the present and future problems facing individuals who plan to enter or stay in education and survival and advancement strategies are outlined for those who wish to remain in education. Basic job search myths and myths relating to education and the marketability of educators are examined. After examining the role of faith, planning, and luck in the career planning process, 20 principles for conducting an effective job search campaign are presented, including advice concerning frauds and hucksters, alternatives to conducting the job search oneself, and the use of library resources. The importance of creating contingencies and redundancy throughout the job search process is also addressed. Additional information includes: developing a functional job objective, writing a resume for outside education, conducting a long-range campaign, and acquiring employment with government agencies. Lists of skills, sample resumes, an SF-171 form, a bibliography, and subject and author indexes are appended. (SW)
