Summary: | The seven most frequently mentioned needs of displaced homemakers are (1) personal counseling; (2) career or vocational counseling; (3) further education or training; (4) information, outreach, publicity; (5) temporary financial or other support during training; (6) jobs and job development; and (7) awareness of own needs. Active publicity and outreach are necessary, since women may be unaware of available services. Most displaced homemakers are in great economic need, but financial resources from government agencies are not readily available to them. Personal counseling needs of displaced homemakers are varied. Loss of spouse may be accompanied by psychological upsets, such as loss of self-esteem. Displaced homemakers need help in developing self-confidence, developing assertiveness, and overcoming emotional problems. One of the most effective resources of support is a peer group. Having their needs met for employment, vocational counseling, including job placement service, is necessary. Most displaced homemakers are handicapped by lack of education or formal training. Obstacles to education include financial considerations, family responsibilities, lack of transportation, poor health, sex and age discrimination, inconvenient course times and locations, and few role models. (An annotated bibliography of displaced homemaker materials is appended.) (YLB) |
