Summary: | This final report describes a research project in sociology of education. The general objective of the project was to develop a framework for analyzing and conceptualizing multi-level social processes that will allow researchers to examine and represent school and classroom socialization structures and their effects. The framework is based on a specialized type of linear statistical model. To develop the framework, the authors built upon previous conceptualizations put forth by several investigators and have carried those ideas forward. It draws mainly on the earlier work of Duncan (1972) and of Hauser (1968), on previous work by Fennessey (1970), and on some more recent work by Cronbach and his associates (1976). Two more specific objectives of the project were (1) to examine and evaluate alternative adjustment strategies proposed for use in multi-level analysis, and (2) to explore the benefits of regarding the individual within-school regression coefficients as a vector variable characterizing the schooling process. The report contains three sections. Section 1 briefly introduces the project. Section 2 describes in some detail the background of the work in developing the general analysis framework. Section 3 gives the main elements presently included in the framework, some areas in which progress was made, and other areas in which problems were encountered. (Author/NE) |
