Description
Summary:These guidelines were designed to provide useful information for hospital school administrators, teachers, and public school staffs in establishing and improving hospital school programs (HSP); and to further define the the position of the Association for the Care of Children's Health concerning the goals of hospital school programs. The rationale of the HSP is discussed, and educational services offered by an HSP are presented including evaluation, instruction, coordination, enrichment, and follow-up. Steps for establishing an HSP are outlined, and standards for HSP personnel are presented including training and qualifications. Space, educational materials, programs, and HSP curricula are described; and the importance of communication with the home school and parents is emphasized. Administrative guidelines and HSP public relations needs are noted. A directory of HSP programs arranged by state provides detailed information about the characteristics of the programs, students, and staff. Other appendices include excerpts from relevant U.S. and Canadian laws, excerpts from Guidelines for the Development of Child Life Programs, curriculum ideas, sample form letters, an example of an HSP and public school agreement, and a sample of job description.
