| Summary: | The Integrated Sequence Program at Davis & Elkins College, which consists of four team-taught, interdisciplinary courses, is described, along with the origins and philosophy of the program. The courses are as follows: Human Freedom and the Counterforces (freshman year); World Culture (sophomore year); Comparative Ideas (junior year); and The Future (senior year). The program involves the student in thought processes that help develop individual convictions, which is an important objective for the church-related college. For each course, attention is directed to course content, educational objectives, course materials, and faculty selection and development. The Integrated Sequence Program has allowed courses to be offered that might otherwise have been abolished, while strengthening the role and visibility of faculty valuable to the liberal arts mission of the college. Additional advantages of this general education sequence is that students learn to recognize interconnections in their studies, and a balance is possible between lecture styles and student involvement. Disadvantages of the program include the fact that certain faculty have come to be associated with the program and a polarity exists between the liberal arts and careerism. (SW) |
