| Summary: | A study was conducted to determine how a population viewed the prospect of receiving news and information electronically. Subjects were 529 students attending Stanford University (California) in the heart of the "Silicon Valley" computer industry. The survey was conducted by mail with a telephone follow-up, and included 108 questions on usage of and attitudes toward traditional media as well as the newer communication technologies and computers. The results indicated that two out of five students: (1) believe that newspapers as they are currently known will be replaced by computerized data banks, and (2) if given the choice, would prefer to receive their news from electronic newspapers rather than from traditional newspapers. Individuals preferring electronic newspapers were more computer oriented in terms of their attitudes toward and their use of computers. Also, men were more likely than women to want to receive their news and information electronically. Since the major differences between groups were attitudes toward and use of computers, it appears that, as society as a whole becomes more familiar with computers, a major barrier to the acceptance of the delivery of news and information electronically will be overcome.
