| 520 | |a Descriptive data about teachers in America were analyzed in terms of the international dimension of education and the social context in which schools operate. Characteristics of teachers, such as age, gender, race, experience, education, and the conditions under which they work, provided a profile of the "typical" teacher. The model teacher emerged as an individual who is inclined toward provincialism, is monolingual, has not systematically studied other cultures, and shows little desire to teach in a multicultural context. Escalating immigration has increased the ethnic diversity of the schools and the need for teachers to broaden their understanding and knowledge of cultures and attitudes different from their own. The need has also grown for widening the international understandings and perspectives of students. A discussion is presented on the necessity of developing a school climate in which teachers and students interact in ways that deepen appreciation for cultural differences and make them aware of the ways in which critical social values and interpersonal qualities can be modeled in the schools. Recommendations are made for developing teacher education programs which will broaden the international awareness of prospective teachers. (JD) | ||
