Summary:Intended as an aid in the selection of software techniques and tools, this document contains three sections: (1) a suggested methodology for the selection of validation, verification, and testing (VVT) techniques and tools; (2) summary matrices by development phase usage, a table of techniques and tools with associated keywords, and an alphabetized table of keywords with associated techniques and tools; and (3) descriptions of 30 individual VVT techniques and tools. Each descriptive entry includes an accepted or invented title; a short description of the basic features of the technique or tool; a description of the input required for use; a description of the results of the technique or the output of the tool; a brief list of the actions that a user is expected to perform or an outline of method; an example to illustrate the inputs, outputs, and the method; a brief assessment of the effectiveness and usability of the technique or tool, including underlying assumptions and difficulties that can be expected in practice; an indication of the situation in which the technique or tool is likely to be useful; an estimate of the learning time and training needed to use the technique or tool successfully; a cost estimate; and a list of additional references.
