Description
Summary:Designed for curriculum directors, teachers, and others as they conduct inservice education activities which focus on helping those who have primary responsibility for selecting and evaluating instructional materials, this volume presents selected sections from Volume I of the "1982-83 Michigan Social Studies Textbook Study." In this study, ten frequently used eighth-grade U. S. history textbooks were examined to determine the extent to which they reflected the pluralistic nature of the United States, promoted the concept of global interdependence, and were educationally sound. Attention was given to the treatment of the following categories: Blacks; American Indians, sex equity, Hispanics, bilingual, the gifted and talented, and handicapped persons; educational soundness; and areas of the world (Africa, East Europe, Middle East, Asia, Latin America, and Canada). Following a description of the study, the document presents an editorial commentary section which includes a summary of recommendations for action, a list of textbooks reviewed, commentary reports by category, a summary of findings, and conclusions. Appendices include educational codes and state board of education recommendations, a bias review checklist, evaluation criteria checklist (bilingual), gifted and talented review checklist, evaluative criteria checklists for educational soundness, textbook analysis, and area studies, an annotated bibliography, and lists of reviewers.
