| 520 | |a These hearings focused on the reauthorization of appropriations for the National Science Foundation (NSF) for fiscal year (FY) 1985. (The Reagan administration's request for the NSF was $1.5 billion, an increase of 13.6 percent over the FY 1984 budget.) The hearings include a prepared statement from Edward Knapp (NSF director) which provides an overview of the FY 1985 budget request and highlights of three initiatives proposed in FY 1985; these initiatives are: (1) the beginning of the construction of the Very Long Baseline Array, (2) expansion of support of computer networking and research time on supercomputers, and (3) a new program to establish cross-disciplinary research centers in engineering; plans for pre-college science and engineering education conclude this statement. Also included are statements and/or testimony from four NSF-funded research scientists--Jaime (Jim) Diaz (psychology), John Knauss (oceanography), Laurence Strong (chemistry), and Richard Claus (engineering), and also from: Anna Harrison (representing the American Association for the Advancement of Science); Robert Blastad Miller (executive director, Consortium of Social Science Associations); Warren Niederhauser (president, American Chemical Society); Robert Williams, Harlyn Halvorson, and Moselio Schaechter (representing the American Society for Microbiology); Strom Thurmond (senator, South Carolina); and Dan Quayle (senator, Indiana).
